An allele is one of two or more variants of a gene or other DNA sequences. Different alleles of a gene generally serve the same function (eg, code for a protein that affects eye colour) but may produce different visual properties (phenotypes) such as blue eyes or brown eyes. It is these alleles that selective breeders take advantage of when attempting to produce an animal with more desirable characteristics.
